Abstract

Aqueous dispersions of air-drying alkyd resins which have been modified by means of drying fatty acids are prepared by carrying out the dispersal in the presence of combinations of nonionic and ionic emulsifiers. The hydrophobic part of the emulsifiers comprises radicals of unsaturated fatty acids or fatty alcohols, which causes chemical incorporation during film formation. The nonionic emulsifiers contain polyethylene glycol chains, and the ionic emulsifiers contain carboxyl groups. Emulsifiers of this type allow a significant reduction in the polyethylene glycol content in the dispersions, which results in an improvement in the resultant paint films, in particular with respect to water resistance.
