Abstract

1484126 Heat exchangers COVRAD Ltd 3 Jan 1975 [5 Oct 1973 16 Aug 1974] 46755/73 Heading F4S [Also in Division B3] In an adhesively-bonded heat exchanger assembly comprising corrugated fin strips 14 sandwiched between tubes 16 of flattened crosssection, at least part of the adhesive for bonding the fins to the tubes is contained in grooves or channels 18 formed in the tubes adjacent the longitudinal edges thereof. The adhesive 13 applied to the grooves 18 is a polyvinylchloride based adhesive. As shown, a thin layer 11 of further adhesive is applied to the planar portion of the tubes 16 and to the base regions 27 of the fin strips 14, although this layer of adhesive may be omitted. Each tube 16 may comprise two half tubes 10, 12 secured together via cooperating turned over flanges 15 and 17 or abutting flanges (23, Fig. 5, not shown). Alternatively the tube may be made in a single piece, e.g. by extrusion (see Fig. 4, not shown). In making a heat exchanger such as a vehicle radiator, an assembly of corrugated fin strips 14 and tubes 16, together with a pair of manifolds 20, 22 and side plates 24, 26 is heated to a temperature of 170‹ C. to fully cure the adhesive 13. Then pressurized-gas is admitted to the tubes 16 to bring the planar surfaces of the tubes and the base regions 27 of the fins together, and the temperature of the assembly is raised to about 150‹ C. to melt the adhesive 11, if present. The assembly is thereafter cooled before releasing the internal pressure, so that the adhesive 11 resolidifies hence bonding the contact surfaces of the fins and tubes together.
