Abstract

1484020 Firefighting composition W GLASER 9 Dec 1974 [12 Feb 1974 11 April 1974 25 April 1974 6 June 1974 6 July 1974 8 Nov 1974] 06268/74 16062/74 18028/74 25183/74 30077/74 and 48332/74 Heading A5A [Also in Division C1] A fire of burning solids or liquids, e.g. burning oil or gas wells is extinguished by applying to the fire solid FeSO 4 . 7H 2 O or non- foaming solutions of said hydrated sulphate. The solid hydrated ferrous sulphate may be mixed with powdered MnO 2 ore and/or portland cement. When solutions are employed, the pH is preferably adjusted to at least 5.5. Caking of the hydrated ferrous sulphate prior to use or dissolution for use may be prevented by addition of sodium aluminium silicate or red mud from the Bayer process.
