Abstract
1483896 Control of A.C. power to a load ELECTROTHERMAL ENG Ltd 20 Jan 1975 [23 Nov 1973] 54586/73 Heading H2H [Also in Division H3] A circuit for supplying and controlling power from an A.C. source to a load is arranged so that switching on of a controlled switch 1L series between the source and to the load can only occur at or near the zero crossings of the supply waveform, and also that a further input may be applied to prevent control signals from reaching the controlled switch. As shown, A.C. is supplied at 3 and may pass through triac T1 to load 6. A rectifier comprising diodes D1, D2, capacitors C1, C2 and zener diode Z1 is connected across the source 3 to supply power to an oscillator comprising operational amplifier IC1, capacitor C4 and resistors R1- R4. The mark/space ratio of the oscillator is variable by means of potentiometer 10 and the output is applied to gating transistor TR2 and thence to the trigger of triac T1 via resistor R6. The period of the oscillator is in the order of 1 second. A voltage detector comprises a bridge rectifier D6-D9 with transistor TR1 connected across a diagonal. This transistor is off only near zero-crossovers of the supply 3 and transistor TR2 is only enabled to pass the oscillator output during this period. The gating transistor TR2 may be inhibited also by a signal on the line 7 via diode D10.
