Counting - apparatus; stopping - arrangements. - Sheets passing into a copying - machine are counted and when a predetermined number as set on the counting - device is reached the counting automatically ceases and an alarm is rung at each subsequent operation of the machine. The counter is operated positively from the main shaft of the copying-machine each time a sheet passes as tested by feelers ; but when no sheet is passing and the impression roller is consequently rendered inoperative, the driving connexion with the counter is broken. The sheets are fed along a table 13 to the stencilling and impression rollers 1, 2 by means of rotary sectors 15 and a co-operating roller 14. The impression roller normally tripped bv a cam on the roller 1 is prevented from rising when a sheet is not passing by a, stop lever 102<a> locked by an arm 103<a> connected by a forked arm 111<a> loose on a shaft 12 with an abutting arm 18 fast on this shaft. When a sheet is absent, feelers 11 are enabled to rise through the table 13 when permitted by the cam 17, and the shaft 12 rocks and causes the arm 103<a> to engage under the stop lever 102<a>. A spring 107<a> connecting the arm 103<a> with an arm 105<a>, is stressed by a cam 106<a> to ensure this obstructing action taking place if the arm 103<a> should at first be unable to pass below the end of the stop lever. The counting-device consists of units and hundreds pointers 23, 27 adapted to be set by hand according to the number of copies desired and connected with corresponding ratchetwheels, each of which carries a notched disk engaged by tumbler pawls 48. The units wheel has a second notched disk to effect transfer through a pair of connected pawls on the actuating-lever, one of which engages the disk and the other the hundreds ratchet-wheel. At each rotation of the machine, a crank 72 rocks a lever 74 suspended from a link 76 hung from the impression-roller supporting-arm 3. If the impressionroller rises into its effective position due to the passage of a sheet, the lever 74 rises also, and its tail 80 comes into line with and operates a lever 81 pivoted to one arm of a lever 56, mounted on the central spindle 21 and carrying the unitsoperating pawl at 55. The lever 81 normally abuts against a stop 84 on the lever 56 to effect a positive connexion in one direction. When the required number of copies has been printed, the tumbler pawls 48 both engage in their notches and this through abutting tails 94, 95 allows a spring 96 to lower an arm 89 and so raise the lever 81 out of the path of the tail 80 of the oscillating lever 74. Simultaneously a hook 121 connected with the tumbler pawls lowers a detent 117 to release a lever 108 which consequently moves under spring action and operates a bell hammer 99. At each subsequent rotation of the machine, the now released lever 108 is oscillated by the lever 74 through a hitherto ineffective lever 113 and so produces a repetition of the signal.
