Abstract

1483634 Insulation for pipes NON-SAG SEATING CO Ltd 13 June 1975 [8 Nov 1974 17 Dec 1974] 48483/74 and 54549/74 Heading F2P [Also in Division B3] An insulation for a pipe or other elongate article comprises a sleeve of preformed insulating material having a longitudinally extending slit to enable the sleeve to be located around a pipe and two radially projecting, longitudinally extending projections, one disposed on each side of the slot, to be secured one to the other to maintain the sleeve in position around the pipe. The sleeve may be of foamed polyurethane, polyethylene or polystyrene and may be substantially cylindrical or alternatively may have an outer surface of substantially polygonal cross-section having 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or more sides which are flat, or alternately flat and radiused around the periphery. The lagging may be secured by clips 13 passing through the projections. A method of forming such insulation comprises removing a central portion of a section of lagging having a square cross-section to accommodate the pipe, forming a diagonal slit towards one corner of the substantially square cross-section and shaping the external surface of the insulation by grinding with a shaped abrasive wheel to produce the projections and the desired cross-section. The lagging of Fig. 4, having an alternately flat and radiused outer surface, is produced by grinding away corners 38 of the square crosssection length of lagging with concave grinding wheels 37 while the projections 39, 39<SP>1</SP>, are formed by grinding wheel 33 having a generally H-shaped diametral cross-section while the slit 31 is simultaneously formed by circular cutter 53.
