Abstract

1483327 Extraction of sugar from molasses BAYER AG and SUDDEUTSCHE ZUCKER-AG 21 April 1976 [24 April 1975] 16108/76 Heading C6B Molasses is separated into sugars and non-sugar constituents by ion exclusion or liquid distribution chromatography on acid cation exchangers based on cross-linked copolymers of monovinyl compounds and divinyl compounds, in which the cation exchangers used are two different resin types A and B, whereof resin type A is a macroporous, acid cation exchanger which contains 8 to 20 wt. per cent of polyvinyl compounds and has an inner surface area of 5 to 150 m2/g of solids, whilst resin type B is an acid cation exchanger in the form of a gel, which contains from 2 to 6 wt. per cent of polyvinyl compounds and in which these resin types are so arranged in a separating column, or in several separating columns arranged in series, that the molasses to be separated first flow through resin type A, and that resin type A accounts for 5 to 35% by volume of the total resin through which the molasses flow. Resin type A may contain 30 to 50 wt. per cent of swelling water and resin type B may contain 55 to 65 wt. per cent of swelling water. The cation exchangers of types A and B may be present in the salt e.g. potassium, sodium, calcium, iron or aluminium form. Preferably the total volume of the bed of the cation exchangers is divided amongst two or more columns arranged in series. Resin types A and B are preferably strongly acid cation exchangers. The separation may be carried out at from 50 to 99‹C.
