Abstract

1483229 Making electrical connections; shearing BUNKER RAMO CORP 1 Oct 1974 [19 Oct 1973] 42564/74 Headings B3A and B3W Apparatus for terminating a plurality of insulated conductors in a corresponding plurality of insulation-piercing contacts on an electrical connector comprises: conductor support means for holding the conductors in spaced relationship corresponding to the contact spacing; conductor cutting means 52 mounted for movement toward and away from a position adjacent the support means for cutting the conductors to extend the same distance from the support means; connector support means, mounted for movement toward and away from the position adjacent the conductor support means, and including means for holding the connector with the contacts aligned parallel and adjacent the conductors; and insertion means 68 for forcing each conductor into a respective insulationpiercing contact. The conductors are dressed through a comb 28 and their ends to be cut are placed in a waste spring 54. A clamp bar 34 is pivoted over the comb and latched to hold the conductors. A cutter bar 58 is moved to cut the conductors in co-operation with a cutter bar 56 and returned to its inoperative position. The base 16 of the conductor support means is pivoted rearwardly to release a limit stop 64 and clear the held conductors from the path of a carriage 50, which is then advanced until it abuts an end stop 42. A connector, which has been previously inserted in a support 72, is now aligned with the conductor ends and the conductor support means is pivoted forwardly to bring them adjacent the contacts in the connector. A handle 104 is then operated to drive an insertion head (86) downwardly so that blades (88), Fig. 6 (not shown), force individual conductors into the insulation piercing contacts. The clamp bar 28 is next released, the terminated conductors and connector removed from the insertion means 68, the support means pivoted rearwardly and the waste removed from the spring 54. A new set of conductors is then dressed through the comb 28 and into the waste spring 54 and the insertion operation is repeated after the carriage 50 has been advanced until the mount 66 of the cutter bar 56 abuts the limit stop 64.
