Abstract

1483064 Chlorobrominated polymers; flameresistant PVC DOVER CHEMICAL CORP 27 June 1974 [28 June 1973] 28552/74 Headings C3P and C3E [Also in Division D1] Natural or synthetic polyisoprenes having a total content of combined chlorine and bromine of at least 55 wt. per cent, there being at least two chlorine atoms and at least one bromine atom for each two monomer units, are produced by reacting the polymers with bromine chloride, preferably in solution. The polymers may first be peptized, e.g. with pentachlorothiophenol or the zinc salt thereof. The chlorobromination may be conducted in the presence of excess chlorine. In examples, the polymers used are peptized natural rubber and peptized high-cispolyisoprene, the solvent being CCl 4 . In Example 3, chlorobrominated peptized polyisoprene is used to impart flame resistance to PVC plasticized with dioctyl phthalate.
