Abstract
1482754 Holography EMI Ltd 13 Sept 1974 [6 Feb 1974] 05376/74 Heading G2J [Also in Division H1] An optically pumped solid state laser includes a mode selector, Fig. 3, which selects a multiple lobe transverse propagation mode, Fig. 1, while . suppressing the fundamental mode(s) and ensures that the multiple lobe mode remains substantially in the same location in a plane normal to the optic axis 12 of the laser. The central, concentric fundamental mode(s) are suppressed by the lines 8 engraved, etched, or evaporated on to an optically flat disc 4. The radial lines 7 are arranged to coincide with intensity minima of the multiple lobe mode, thereby preventing its rotation. In this way a relatively large diameter laser beam having coherence sufficient for holography is obtained. The lines, 7, 8 may be marked on the resonator mirror 1. For holographic purposes reference and object beams are derived by a beam-splitter 9, Fig. 6 which is a glass disc having a diffusing surface 16 and a polished one 17. A coated 34 degrees reflecting sector 18 produces the reference beam, the transmitted light, scattered by surface 16, constituting the object beam.
