Abstract
1482500 Independent rear suspensions VOLKSWAGENWERK AG 28 Nov 1975 [30 Nov 1974] 48939/75 Heading B7D In a rear suspension comprising on each side of a motor vehicle body 3 a longitudinal link 1, 2 and a spring strut 8 secured to a wheel carrier 9, the links 1, 2 are made from sheet steel and are interconnected near their forward ends by a steel strip 4 to form a one-piece horizontal sheet steel structure which is angularly rigid in a horizontal plane so the links 1, 2 can carry lateral loads. The links 1, 2 and the strip 4 may be stiffened by bands along one or both edges or by longitudinal corrugations. Bearings 5, 6 connecting the links 1, 2 to the body 3 are spaced in front of the strip 4 to produce a twisting effect on the links 1, 2 when the body rolls during turns which reduces the bending moments acting on the struts due to lateral loading of the rear wheels 10. Trunnions 7 which connect the links 1, 2 to the struts 8 or the wheel carriers 9 have inclined axes so that a change in camber results from upward deflection of a wheel.
