Abstract

1482154 Shock absorbers E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 22 July 1974 [27 July 1973] 32384/74 Heading F2S [Also in Division B7] A compressible energy absorbing member formed of an elastomeric material with a tangent modulus of elasticity at room temperature in the range 3000-20,000 lbs./m.<SP>2</SP> (21,000- 140,000 kPa.), comprises at least one rib of corrugated configuration as seen in crosssection perpendicular to its intended direction of compression, the span of the rib being at least 1¢ times the full period B as measured along the axis xx half-way between the oppositely facing crests of the corrugations, and the length (not shown) of the rib in said intended direction of compression being at least five times its thickness t as seen in the cross-section. Preferred dimensions are given as 1-3 inches for the height H of the corrugations, 1-6 inches for the span and # to ¢ inch for the thickness t. Either or both ends of the rib may be free standing or attached to a connecting member which may be of the same material as a onepiece construction. The material may be a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and 1,4-hexadiene. Fig. 7 (not shown) illustrates a car bumper comprising 3 energy absorbing members AB, CD and EF each of a calculated number of ribs. of a specified grade of rubber contained within a casing of e.g. rubber, steel, glass fibre composites or a nylon resin.
