Abstract

1482118 Automatic positioning CONTINENTAL GROUP Inc 20 Aug 1974 [21 Aug 1973] 36658/74 Heading G3N In the positioning of a tubular body (can) in a predetermined angular orientation, a registration mark 38 on the body which rotates on platen 18 is detected by scanner 36, verified as correct by gating system 42, and, when the end of the mark passes the scanner, the speed of the servomotor 14 is reduced, from a constant speed, progressivley to zero, the speed being function of the d/a converted difference between the contents of counters 58, 48, the former containing a pre-set value representing a desired stopping orientation, the latter being counted, by pulses from motor driven pulse generator 30, from a reset value prevailing when the end of the mark is detected. The positioned body is embossed in registration with printing already applied to it, or is reshaped, an internal pressure bag inserted into the body pressing its walls against a surrounding mould carried to the stations. There may be a plurality of moulding stations on a turret, and two orientation arrangements in simultaneous use, switches 62, 64, 66, 68 coupling the servomotor, scanner and pulse generator for a typical station to an orientation arrangement, and establishing a pre-set count particular to the coupled station in counter 58 hence establishing a particular stopping orientation. Each servomotor is associated with a tachogenerator 22 and servo-amplifier 26. The operation of the switches initiates a cycle of timer 44, and within the timing interval either the mark is scanned and verified, verification occurring if counter 48 reaches a predetermined count value while the mark is being scanned, the counter being reset by the verification signal, from unit (94), Fig. 2 (not shown); or the body is rejected under control of a signal from unit (116). End of mark detection unit (108) which normally functions in response to a verified mark to switch the servo drive from the constant speed source 52 to the variable speed source 54 initially in a state of saturation, and to enable counter 48 to count the pulses from the pulse generator without being reset, may also cause resetting of the counter 48 if the detected mark is too short. If the motor reverses the counter is reset. The pulse generator is optically actuated, and direction sensitive. Pre-set counter, (58) Fig. 4 (not shown). Each row of a cross point matrix system is coupled to lines each representing a station, diode (336) being inserted into each row at column positions corresponding to bit positions of the pre-set number desired for the station.
