Abstract
1462322 Identifying bottles POWERS Mfg Inc 21 April 1975 [7 May 1974] 16332/75 Heading G1A Apparatus for identifying a bottle with marks on part of its bottom wall comprises means for directing a laser beam through said part, means for causing relative rotation between said bottle and said beam and means for generating an electrical bottle identification signal in response to means for detecting the presence or absence of spreading of the beam due to the marks. Bottles 16, uniformily spaced by screw conveyer 17, are carried by conveyer 14. In the inspection area a bottle 16 is engaged by rollers 18 pressing it against belt 24 driven by a variable speed motor so that it rotates through at least 360 degrees there. Rollers 18 are on horizontal plunger 20 mounted on reciprocating carriage 22. At the beginning of a stroke of carriage 22 in direction A plunger 20 is biased towards bottle 16 and at the end of a stroke it is biased away and then carriage 22 returns at a sinusoidal rate. Carriages 22 and 28 and conveyers 14 and 17 move in synchronism. Carriage 28 reciprocates in direction A and carries reciprocating plunger 33 with rubber or plastics rollers 58 which hold the bottle down. Laser 26 on carriage 28 is adjusted to pass a beam through a pair of aligned apertures 62, 63 on plates 60, 61 on carriage 28 and then mirror 32 on plate 61 directs a beam through the bottle opening and bottom wall to mirror 40 on conveyer 14 to sensor 35. Details of components on carriage 22 and operation of plunger 20 are given with Fig. 2 (not shown). For binary identification a plurality of marks 68 Fig. 5 are distributed with either one mark or more in each annular segment 66 on the bottle bottom wall. If there is no mark the beam strikes mask 70. If there is, the beam spreads as at C and D striking photo-cells 72, 73. The preferred shape of a mask is a triangular prism. The pattern of pulses supplied by detectors 72, 73 on lines (99), (125) Fig. 10 (not shown) is converted to BCD by de-coder (106) and compared in comparator (117) with a digital number stored in ejector memory (118). If the numbers are identical, ejector (121) ejects the bottle. The beginning and end of a pattern are determined when the beam is continuously spread by the timing sectors S and T, each with four marks.
