Abstract

1481722 Scarfing NIPPON STEEL CORP 5 Aug 1974 [6 Aug 1973 (2)] 34343/74 Heading B3V In a method of initiating an oxygen scarfing process by contacting the workpiece 20 with a consumable electrode 26 whilst the workpiece 20 and an oxygen scarfing nozzle 25 are moving relative to each other and passing an electrical current through the electrode 26 to rapidly heat the workpiece 20 to scarfing initiation temperature, the electrode 26 comprises a steel sheath filled with one oxygen generating material and a combustible material. The steel sheath, which may be seamless or formed from a strip having its ends folded inwards (Fig. 5b, not shown), contains BaO 2 , KClO 4 or KIMnO 4 and/or Fe 2 O 3 or Fe 3 O 4 powder as the oxygen generating material and Al, Mg or Ca and/or Fe powder as the combustible material The oxygen generating material comprises 5 to 50% by weight and the aluminium powder comprises less than 10% by weight of the total powder mixture. The electrode may contain a steel core wire (Fig. 5c, not shown).
