Abstract

1481545 Infra-red tracking equipment G PUSCH 22 Oct 1974 45672/74 Heading H4D To determine the maximum detection range R of passive infra-red tracking equipment, the visual range of the equipment, the humidity of the atmosphere, the temperature contrast of the target (against background) and the sensitivity of the equipment are determined and these factors used to calculate said maximum detection range. The maximum detection range is part limited by atmospheric attenuation a t , which is made up of two parts-attenuation due to water absorption (a a ) and attenuation due to scattering (a s )-i.e. a a is calculated from the humidity (which is measurable by a variable electrical resistance) and a s is calculated from the visual range. A formula K=minimum temperature contrast detectable by the equipment, and is determined from said sensitivity. K 0 = temperature contrast of the target. is used and implemented in a computer to determine R.
