Abstract

1481361 Photopolymerizable materials S MATSUMOTO and K TAKAGI 20 April 1974 17403/74 Heading G2C [Also in Division C3] Photopolymerizable compositions useful for the production of sheet structures, such as identification cards, credit cards, season tickets and the like, comprise a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer having an average molecular weight of from 1,000 to 2,000 or a partially esterified derivative thereof, a photopolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and a photopolymerization initiator. The monomer preferably has at least two ethylenic bonds and may be, for example, one or more of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, triethylene glycol dimethacrylate, trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate, tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate and 1, 3-butanediol dimethacrylate. The initiator may be a polynuclear quinone, benzoin or a derivative thereof, a benzophenone compound, Michler's ketone or tetramethylthiuram disulphide. The compositions may also include polymerization inhibitors, pigments, and silicic acid, as a filler or viscosity adjuster. In the preparation of the sheet structures, at least one layer of the photopolymerizable composition is deposited on a base sheet, e.g. of PVC, cured by imagewise exposure to ultraviolet light, and developed by washing out the unexposed areas, e.g. with a weak aqueous alkaline solution. The sheet structure may also include a layer of pigment and, before expsoure, may be provided with a protective coating of a water-soluble polymer, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol. The protective coating may also include a nonionic surfactant and an alkalisoluble polymer.
