Abstract

5-nitroimidazoles of the formula I, in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 are identical or different and in each case denote an aliphatic, araliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical or hydrogen, and R1 + R4 furthermore denote carbalkoxy having 2-6 C atoms or carbamoyl, are prepared by reacting suitable 5-nitroimidazoles with suitable 1,2-alkylene oxides in the presence of phosphoric acid and the mixed anhydride of formic acid and acetic acid. The resulting compounds are suitable as catalysts for polymerisation and condensation reactions and as intermediates for the preparation of pharmaceuticals, colorants and insecticides. They also have chemotherapeutic properties. <IMAGE>
