Abstract

1481318 Bearings UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 14 May 1975 [17 July 1974] 31749/74 Addition to 1380810 Heading F2A A gas lubricated bearing assembly 20 comprises a shaft 28 and sleeve 21, where the sleeve is fixed and the shaft rotatable, the bearing surfaces being such that a gas bearing film is maintained therebetween, the relative axial positions of the shaft and sleeves being maintained by a hydrostatic gas end thrust bearing formed by a cushion of gas in a trapped space at an end of the shaft and by an oppositely acting grooved hydrodynamic gas thrust bearing defined between co-operating radially extending faces 31 and 32 on the shaft and sleeve with means 42 for supplying pressurized gas to the inner end of the radial faces, wherein the stationary thrust plate 51 having front face 32 is formed with a cylindrical extension 57 on its rear face which fits within a resilient ring 53 which in turn fits within an annular recess 54 in support member 50.
