Stationary batch mixers with rotary stirrers.- Apparatus for dissolving materials in or impregnating them with acids &c., particularly applicable to the nitration of cotton, comprises a receptacle A for the materials-for example, cotton and acid -a reciprocating and rotating plate B which depresses the cotton into the acid, and which during its immersion agitates the materials, and a scraper C which engages the plate B after it leaves the receptacle A; the reciprocating motion of the plate B is ccntrolled automatically. The driving shaft is connected by oppositely-disposed bevels b, b<1> with the main driving bevel b carried by a shaft e driving through bevel-gearing d, c, the screw-threaded shaft a carrying the plate B and mounted in a nut b<1>. A clutch member k, k<1>, arranged to put either of the bevels h, h<1> into driving engagement with the shaft j is fitted between these wheels, and its position is controlled by a yoke m. To actuate the yoke, the shaft c is arranged to drive a shaft s, screwthreaded and mounted in bearings t so as to be reciprocated; a rack r carried by the shaft s thereupon reciprocates a hollow spindle o through which passes a feathered spindle n ; the latter is threaded to engage a nut carried by the yoke m, so that as the spindle is rotated, so the yoke is moved to put one or other of the clutch members k, k<1> into engagement with its bevel h, h<1>; a tumbling weight q is provided to carry over the dead point. Reversal of the motion can be effected at any moment by actuating the weight q by means of cords x, x<1>; and motion is started by actuating a weighted lever w by means of cords v, v<1> and which has the effect of reciprocating the spindle n.
