Abstract
1481245 Valves; hydrodynamic brakes LABAVIA-SGE 30 Dec 1974 [8 Jan 1974] 56070/74 Headings F2E and F2V Fluid flow through a vehicle hydraulic retarder is controlled by a valve member 10, having three holes 11, co-operating with a seat 5 in the contact conduit of the retarder. The valve member 10 is spring-loaded towards the seat 5 and slides on a rod 9 which may be displaced to the right as shown in Fig. 1, to permit of rapid emptying of the retarder. With the rod to the left the valve acts on a fluid pressure relief valve. The rod may be moved to the right by an electro-magnet or, as shown in Fig. 1, by a spring 19. To move the rod to the left negative pressure from the vehicle engine inlet manifold 29 is admitted to a chamber 16 bounded by a diaphragm 17 the other side of which is at atmospheric pressure. An electro-magnetic valve 32, operated by the vehicle brake or accelerator pedal 33 controls the admission of negative pressure to the chamber 16 and at the same time operates a three-way valve 28 which switches engine cooling water into the retarder to bring it into use. Instead of the holes 11 in the closure member 10 a notch may be provided in the periphery of the valve or a by-pass passage may be provided.
