Abstract
1481182 Coating compositions CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 13 Nov 1974 [14 Nov 1973] 49086/74 Headings C3B and C3R A heat-curable coating composition contains a mixture of an aminoplast resin or a precursor thereof and a hydroxy-containing polyester in which less than 50 wt. per cent of the acid component is unsaturated, or an acrylic resin as binder and an adduct of an epoxy compound and a monosulphonic acid, containing 0À1-1 sulphonic acid groups per epoxy group, as curing accelerator. The aminoplast may derive, e.g. from urea, melamine, dicyandiamide or benzoguanamine and formaldehyde and may be etherified; suitable polyesters listed are those derived from diols or triols and dicarboxylic acids, and alkyds containing fatty acids or natural oils; suitable acrylic resins derive from (meth)acrylic esters and hydroxyesters, optionally with olefins or aromatic vinyl compounds. In examples polyesters from ethylene and propylene glycols and phthalic anhydride and adipic acid (unthinned) and from dimethylol cyclohexane and glycerol and the same acids (60%) in xylene), in the molar ratios 2À1 : 2À1 : 1 : 1 and 9 : 3 : 6: 5 respectively, or commercial alkyd resins containing 40% of coco oil or castor oil (60% in xylene), are mixed in 7 : 3 : 7 weight ratio with hexamethoxymethyl melamine and TiO 2 , and catalysed with 0À5 phr. of the product of reaction of a 10% solution of p-toluenesulphonic acid in ethylene glycol butyl ether with an equal weight of a commercial alpha-branched fatty acid glycidyl ester or a bisphenol A/epichlorohydrin epoxy resin.
