Abstract

1481163 Coated products FASTBAC RESEARCH Ltd 26 June 1974 [22 June 1973] 29768/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division B5] A sound absorbing material comprises a first layer of foamed flexible plastics material, e.g. of polyether or polyester material, and a second layer secured thereto without the use of a separately applied adhesive, the second layer being of non-foamed elastomeric material and being applied to the first layer in a manner such that predetermined areas of the face of the first layer are exposed through apertures extending directly through the second layer. The surface area of the foam exposed through the second layer may be approximately 10- 25% of the total area of the surface of the foam. The second layer may be formed of a plurality of straight parallel strips, each strip may have a width of approximately 0.1 inch, the spacing between the strips being approximately 0.025 inch. The sound absorbing material may be made by a continuous process in which the reacting elastomer mixture is deposited on to a moving belt formed with indentations against which a sheet of foamed plastics material is pressed. Alternatively the second layer may be sprayed or otherwise coated over the foamed layer using a mask or grid, or extruded thereon in the form of individual strips. The second layer may also be formed by providing the first layer with a continuous coating and pressing a mask or grid thereagainst to form the coating into a perforate layer or scraping portions of the continuous coating from the face of the first layer to provide the second layer.
