Abstract

1481067 Doffing wound balls of material G & W MASCHINEN AG 2 Sept 1974 [3 Sept 1973] 38308/74 Heading B1J [Also in Division B4] The invention relates to a method and apparatus for handling wound balls of yarn in a machine having parallel rotating spindles and wherein wound balls of yarn are ejected from said spindles. According to the invention the yarn on each ejected ball remains connected by a connecting portion with the yarn on the ball to be ejected next, and wherein the connecting portion of the yarn is directed to a predetermined locality and there cut, the resultant outside yarn end of the ejected ball being pulled inside the ejected ball. The apparatus includes, for each of the parallel rotating spindles, directing members for directing the portion of yarn connecting a first ejected ball to the next to be ejected ball towards a predetermined locality and to cut the yarn portion thereat, and means to pull the resultant outside yarn end of the ejected ball inside the ball. In Fig. 2 a ball 10 of yarn has been wound on a rotating spindle 1. In Fig. 3 a yarn catching device in the form of a suction tube 27 has been moved upwardly to receive the ball 10 as it is pushed off the spindle 1 by the next package 11, the doffed package 10 sliding down the tube 27 to rest on a support-member 24. The tube 27 is then lowered to the setting shown in Fig. 4 and cutting means 40, 41 sever the yarn length 14, 15 extending between the packages 11, 10; the cut end 15 being sucked into the tube 27. Fig. 5 shows how the tube 27 is then fully retracted causing the yarn end 15 to be drawn into the wound ball 10. The ball 10 then drops off the support-member 24 and falls onto a conveyor 12. The cutting means may be in the form shown in Fig. 7 in which three cutting blades 40, 41, 42, each rock about an individual pivot 45 by means of links 48 coupled to a rotatable ring 47.
