Abstract

1480746 Measuring pressure or force electrically R J SAVAGE 10 Dec 1974 [10 Dec 1973] 57223/73 Headings G1N and G1W Apparatus for measuring an incident load or pressure acting on a structure includes a first member 3 for connection to the structure and a second, saucer-shaped, member 2 with its convex base facing away from the structure to receive said incident load or pressure, and its rim bearing against the first member 3 so that the second member 2 is able to deform elastically substantially freely under said load or pressure, and transducer means 7 coupled to the first and/or second member for producing an electrical signal indicative of the deformation of the second member. The transducer means 7 may be electrical resistance strain gauges or silicon chip strain gauges mounted symmetrically on the first and second members 3, 2 and connected to a bridge circuit or other measuring circuit. Alternatively the transducer may be a vibrating wire stretched between diametrically opposite points of the concave surface of the member 2 and excited by an electromagnet in a detecting circuit. Capacitance or reluctance transducers could be used. The first member 3 has a tube 6 to carry wiring to the transducer means, and may be flat, as shown, or, if the apparatus is to serve as a buried soil pressure gauge, may be saucer-shaped and oppositely disposed to the second member 2 to form a shell-like enclosure therewith. The second member 2 may be directly exposed to the incident load or pressure, or, as shown, may be covered by a third member 4. A deformable sealing ring 5 of plastics may enclose the periphery of the apparatus. The second member 2 is of aluminium, and the first and third members 3, 4 of stainless steel. In the shell-like soil pressure gauge above, both members may be of hard plastics. Failure of the second member 2 at a predetermined load may trigger an alarm. A peripheral array of these sensors may be used to measure external loads or pressures acting on lining segments (8) of a tunnel, Fig. 2A, (not shown).
