Abstract

1480739 Jointing by rolling ARTHUR LEE & SONS Ltd 25 Oct 1974 [25 Oct 1973] 49829/73 Heading B3M A metal workpiece 12 is fed through fluidized bed heating apparatus 10 to bring it to a hot working temperature, the workpiece being enclosed in a controlled atmosphere during both heating and hot working. The workpiece may be a metal rod, strip or wire and may be worked by rolls 18. A further fluidized bed 22 may be used for cooling the workpiece before coiling. The fluidized bed 10 may be heated by gas or electricity, an inert gas being used in the case of electrical heating. The bed 22, which is fluidized by an inert gas and is provided with cooling coils, may be divided into zones of different temperature (suitable for austempering for example). Two or more workpieces may be united by the rolls, the workpieces being heated in separate fluidized beds having temperatures appropriate to the individual workpieces.
