Abstract
1480318 Controlling capacitance of extruded conductor sheath PHILLIPS CABLES Ltd 24 June 1975 26779/75 Heading B5A [Also in Division G3] An electrical telephone conductor 5 is provided with a foamed thermoplastics insulation sheath of desired uniform capacitance and diameter, by extruding the thermoplastics around the conductor from a die 25 and arresting foaming of the thermoplastics in a cooling water trough 33, the degree of foaming being regulated to obtain the uniform capacitance by measuring only the deviation from that desired, and automatically displacing the cooling trough 33 towards or away from the die 25 in response to the measured deviation, after the process has been operated to obtain the required capacitance at a mean position of the trough by adjusting the operation of any of at least a traction device 45 drawing the conductor through the trough 33, the extruder, the cooling trough and a conductor preheater which may optionally be provided. The displacement of the trough 33 is effected by an upstream portion 35 thereof being telescopically dieplaceable with respect to a downstream portion of the trough, the displacement being effected by a rack 36 and pinion 37, operable by a motor 39 actuated by a control means 43 receiving a signal from a means 41 which continuously measures the capacitance of the sheathed conductor. The adjustment of the extruder 15 may comprise adjustment of the heating of the extruder barrel 19 by heaters 27, of cooling of the screw 17 by a cooling means 29, or of rate of screw rotation by a motor 21. Where the range of control exercised by displacement of the cooling trough is inadequate, limit switches 49 are actuated by the trough at either end of its displacement, for control to be exercised by the means 43 on a further variable of the process, which may comprise the screw speed, or preferably the screw cooling means 29 by changing the rate of flow of coolant. The conductor 5 may comprise copper, copper aluminium alloy, or copper steel laminate, and the insulation polyethylene or polypropylene.
