Abstract

1479871 Permanent magnet materials BBC BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 30 Oct 1975 [14 Jan 1975] 44961/75 Heading C7A A permanent magnet material with the general Formula: - (MM 1-x Md x ) 1-y Smy Cos wherein 0À25 # x < 1À0, 0 # y < 0À25 and MM is a mixed metal containing Ceα La# Prγ where:- 0À50 < α < 0À70 0À22 < # < 0À45 0À0 < γ < 0À06 and α+#+γ=1 is made by melting stoichochemical proportions of the alloys in BC crucibles in argon in a MF furnace at about 1200‹C. After fusion, the cooled alloys are ground and mixed with powdered sintered additives i.e. Sm40 Co60, so that 10-14% of the total weight of the mixture is the Sm40Co60 additive. The mixture is pressed, magnetically aligned, further isostatically pressed at 600 atmospheres and sintered at 1040‹C prior to heat-treating at 980‹C and cooling in argon or liquid nitrogen. Further annealing at 350‹C is employed. Permanent magnets made by this process and with this composition are said to have a coercitive field strength which is independent of temperature between RT - 300‹C, and are consequently of value as permanent magnets in electric motors.
