Abstract

1479783 Analysis of chromatography effluent; sample conveyer PYE Ltd 16 Dec 1974 54185/74 Heading G1B A sample conveyer system comprises a track in the form of substantially horizontal tube 20 for conveyance of samples, one or more unattached carrier elements 40 located on the track, the or each carrier element occupying the width of the track and having a portion adapted to retain a sample, and means 13 for vibrating the track to effect movement of the carrier element(s) along the track. In the embodiment shown each carrier element is a steel bar having stainless steel metal mesh 41 wrapped around it, the bar being shaped to conform with the curvature of the track in tube 20 Fig. 3 (not shown). In an alternative embodiment there may be used a single carrier element in the form of a continuous ring of wire mesh weighted at intervals with steel bars. Vibrator unit 13 provides reciprocatory motion of controllable amplitude. The system may be used in apparatus for analysis of chromatography column effluent, the effluent being deposited via a tube 50 on to each or the carrier element as it passes opening 26 in thermally insulating jacket 30. The deposited effluent passes heat gun 43, which evaporates solvent to leave a residue, heat gun 44, which gasifies the residue, and heat gun 45, which cleans the surface of the carrier element, the gasified residue being swept to the detector system by an air stream introduced at 21, 23. Carbon dioxide in the stream reacts with hydrogen over a nickel catalyst in reaction chamber 59 to produce methane which is detected by flame ionization detector 60.
