Abstract

1479266 Position indicating balloon devices K C FOSTER 22 May 1974 [22 Feb 1973] 8706/73 Headings B7G and B7W A position marker device comprises a casing 34 formed by first and second casing parts 35, 32, a balloon 31 and attachment means 14, 15 for attaching the balloon to an object or person the position of which is to be marked, the balloon being held within the casing either charged with gas under pressure or in communication with a gas under pressure in a container, in the embodiment the casing part 32, the casing preventing expansion of the balloon until the two casing parts 35, 32 are separated to permit release of the balloon. The casing part 32, suspended in flight by the balloon is connected to the part 35 by a line 40 mounted on a reel within the part 35. In an alternative embodiment the balloon is preinflated and forced within a container enclosing the line reel and retained by a releasable cap. In another embodiment the casing is formed from a plurality of contiguous axially extending leaves mounted on a common circumferential hinge at one end and prevented from hinging apart under balloon pressure by a removable cap at the other end. The balloon may be visually reflective or have a coating reflective to radar or it may carry a radio transmitter or a light source.
