Abstract

1479151 Solid electrolyte sensor THOMSON-CSF 13 Nov 1974 [16 Nov 1973] 49187/74 Heading G1N A solid electrolyte sensor comprises a solid electrolyte wall 2 of thickness 100-1000 Šngstroms with an electrode, 1, 3 on each side, the wall/electrode assembly being deposited on a porous substrate 4. The sensor may be used to measure a gas e.g. oxygen in a liquid or gas mixture and may be formed on the end of a 1-3 mm. diameter tube for measuring blood oxygen. The solid electrolyte may be zirconium dioxide or thorium oxide doped with alkali metal oxide, alkaline earth metal oxides or rare earth oxides, preferably of lanthanum or yttrium. It may be made into the wall by vaporization under vacuum, cathode sputtering, cracking or electro-chemical techniques. The electrodes are porous and may be made by thin film deposition so as to leave enucleated portions. They may be made from silver, platinum, gold, copper or iridium. The porous substrate may be alumina.
