1479084 Production of o-diphenols AGENCY OF INDSTRUIAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 20 Oct 1975 [21 Oct 1974 (2) 11 Dec 1974] 42963/75 Heading C2C The invention relates to a process for the production of o-diphenols which comprises oxidizing an aqueous solution of a monophenol unsubstituted in at least one of its ortho positions with molecular oxygen in the presence of phenolase and thereafter subjecting the resulting reaction liquid to reduction under acidic conditions with a lower valent oxide of a transition metal (by this term is meant an oxide of a transition metal for which two or more oxides can be formed, in which the degree of oxidation is lower than the degree of oxidation of the other oxides formed by the transition metal), or a metal greater in ionizing tendency than hydrogen. The phenolase is preferably tyrosinase. As a variant of the above process a reducing substance (which may be other than those described above) may be co-existent with phenolase in the oxidizing reaction system.
