Abstract

1479002 Treating blood extracorporeally T E SPIELBERG 6 June 1974 [6 June 1973] 25287/74 Heading A5R [Also in Division B1] An artificial gland structure comprises a fluid-tight shell in which a blood flow path is separated from cellular material by a membrane which regulates the secretion of glandular products into the blood stream (see Division B1X). The structure is positioned external to a patient's body e.g. on the wrist, and conduits terminating in a hollow needles are connected with blood channels in the body and the blood flow passes through the shell via ports. Pancreatic cells, for the secretion of insulin, are envisaged as the cellular material. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 1401191.
