1478800 Spinneret ROTHMANS OF PALL MALL CANADA Ltd 2 Dec 1975 [3 Dec 1974] 49536/75 Heading B5B The spinneret comprises a support block 12, a body member 18 and two block members 38 and 40 bolted to each other. Block 12 has an opening 14 associated with an internal chamber 16 to receive molten polymeric material from an extruder (not shown). A cavity 30 in fluid flow communication with the chamber 16 is provided in body 18 and a plurality of capillary channels 32 link 30 with the exterior of block 18, which in turn has a protrusion 22 having converging planar faces, 24 and 26 converging to and terminating at the line of intersection through 32. Two block members 28 and 40 are on each vertical side of protrusion 22, each member having a face 44 complementarily angled with respect to the adjacent planar face 24 and 26 and in engagement therewith. A plurality of grooves 46 in faces 44 define with face 24 and 26 passages 48. Equal numbers of channels 34 and 48 are present. An elongated gallery 58 and 60 extends coextensively of blocks 38 and 40 and is in fluid flow communication with a source of compressed air. Conduits 62 join galleries 58 and 60 to passages 48 to provide for each orifice 34 two converging air streams in passages 48. Molten polymeric material is extruded into each of the converging air streams over a path length of each of the converging air streams upstream of intersection 28 and the air stream then draws the extruded material into a fibre which is conveyed away from the extrusion head encased by the air stream which prevents bundling. A wide variety of polymers may be extruded.
