Abstract

1478583 Electric hot plate ETABS EUGENE SCHOLTES 21 Jan 1975 [23 Jan 1974] 2559/75 Heading H5H To prevent overheating of the glass-ceramic hot plate 1 in the area surrounding the thermostatically controlled heating resistance 6, an additional temperature sensor 19 surrounding the resistance 6 is connected to a control device (not shown) to de-energize the heating resistance should the temperature of the surrounding area become excessive. The heating resistance 6 is a spiral metal sheathed element with a flattened upper surface mounted by spaced supports 8 in an annular reflective trough 7 which cooperates with glass-ceramic hot plate 1 to form a sealed chamber. A casing 9, 10, 12 made of thermal insulation is spaced from an external housing 3 by distance pieces 11. The reflector 7 is centred in an aperture of the upper wall 9 of casing 9, 10, 12. A metal bulb type sensor 15 of an adjustable thermostiatc switch is in direct contact with the centre of the heating zone to control cooking temperature. The additional temperature sensor 19 is in the form of a tube filled with an expansible liquid or in the form of a temperature sensitive resistor. Sensor 19 prevents overheating of the surrounding area due to inaccurate centring of a cooking vessel on the cooking zone, the use of too small a cooking vessel, the use of a vessel with a convex bottom, or the user forgetting to switch off the hot plate. The cut-out temperature of the sensor 19 may be fixed or it may be adjustable with the thermostat. If it is adjustable with the thermostat it is arranged always to cause cut-off at a higher temperature than the regulating temperature of the thermostat. In an alternative construction the flat upper surface of the resistance 6 engages the glass-ceramic hot plate 1 but the spaced supports 8 are mounted on a reflecting screen spaced from the bottom of a easing by a corrugated metal screen. The hot plate may be built into a conventional cooker or into work tops of kitchen furniture.
