Abstract

1478331 Packages KAY-METZELER Ltd and TRANSPARENT PAPER Ltd 27 March 1975 [25 April 1974] 18043/74 Heading B8C A shock resistant package comprises an article 23 skin packaged to a substrate 25 consisting of or including polyurethane foam, the article being held captive to the substrate by a skin of an ionomeric plastics film 24 laminated to the substrate by heat-sealing except where it is held away from the latter by the article. In one method of making the package the substrate 25 is laid on a perforated support 11 forming the top of a chamber 10, an article 23 is laid on the substrate, and a film 24 is supported by a frame 16 adjacent infra-red heaters 22. When the film has softened the frame 16 is lowered into contact with a gasket 14 on the chamber 10, and suction is applied via a pipe 15 to withdraw air from the chamber 10 and below the film 24 so that the latter adheres to the substrate 25 about the article 23. The article may consist of an object and a further piece of foam placed between the object and the upper skin. The foam, which may be of comminuted foam chips adhered together by a suitable adhesive, may be recessed or folded to partly surround the article. The substrate may also include a card having an adhered foam overlay or may be a container having one or more pockets with foam inserts. The upper layer of the foam substrate may be decorated by flock spraying, painting, or printing.
