In a package for articles, such as coins, tokens &c., which have indicia in relief thereon, and comprising layers 12, 14 preferably made of paper and bonded together around the article, the inner surfaces 22, 24 of the layers 12, 14 are provided with a regular pattern of rows of discrete beads 20 of plastics polymeric material in order to prevent a person tracing through the package material before opening the package to determine the surface contour of the packaged article. The package layers, such as 12, Fig. 5, are each fed between printing and back-up rollers 34, 40 to receive a pattern of beads 20, a roller 32 transferring heated polymeric material 28 from a tray 30 to the printing roller 34 which is associated with a doctor blade 38. In an apparatus for forming packages, Fig. 3, the layers 12, 14, having beads 20, are fed over rollers 42, 44 and downwardly on either side of a spout 48, between a pair of resiliently mounted sealing blocks 52, 54 having yieldably mounted soft pads 66, 74 mounted in recesses 66, 72 therein and serrated sealing joins 64 around the recesses 66. The lower portions of the jams 64 have a heater 78 so that an open-topped package is first formed to subsequently receive a coin 16 from the louvred spout 48 when the jams 64 are brought together to seal the bottom and lower sides of the package. The jams 64 are brought together again after a downward indexing of the layers 12, 14 to seal the upper portion of the loaded package while simultaneously sealing the bottom and side portions of the next package. Finished packages may be removed in a continuous strip or, be cut into individual discrete packages. The packages may also be formed by an apparatus which folds a single sheet of material.
