Abstract
An abrasive based on alumina or alumina and zirconia is produced by melting the oxide or oxides and rapid cooling of the melt. For this purpose, the oxide melt is disintegrated in the atmosphere of a gas which is inert towards the melt and/or by using such gases as atomising agents for the melt. The melt solidifies rapidly, and the solidified product is then processed to give abrasive grains. The abrasive produced is suitable above all for precision grinding and semi-precision grinding.
