Abstract
1477720 Rendering building material hydrophobic WACKER-CHEMIE GmbH 11 Nov 1974 [9 Nov 1973] 48787/74 Heading D1P Shaped building materials e.g. glazed ceramic tiles, bricks, structures of natural and/ or synthetic stones, mortar, cement, asbestos cement, or concrete, and plaster surfaces, are rendered hydrophobic by applying to the surface thereof a solution of a hydrophobic agent thickened by admixture with from 1-25% by weight of a filler having a BET surface area of at least 50 m<SP>2</SP>/g, and removing any residue of filler from the surface after evaporation of the solvent. The hydrophobic agent is preferably an organo silicon compound e.g. an organo polysiloxane, a hydrolysable optionally halogenated alkyl or aryl silane or an alkali metal hydrocarbon siliconate (monomeric or polymeric) but may also be a synthetic resin or aliphatic hydrocarbon. The solvent may be water, an organic solvent (either water-immiscible or water-miscible), or a mixture of water and a water-miscible organic solvent e.g. an alcohol or ketone. The filler, which is preferably colourless and present as a visible suspension may be a silicon dioxide (pyrogenically produced, aerogel or precipitated), a pyrogenically produced titanium dioxide or a mixture. The fillers may carry organic or siliconorganic compounds adhering or chemically bonded to their surface. Trimethyl siloxy groups may be formed by reacting pyrogenically produced silicon dioxide with trimethyl ethoxy silane. The fillers may be admixed with other fillers having a surface area of less than 50 m<SP>2</SP>/g and are preferably present in an amount of 5-15% by weight based on the hydrophobic agent and solvent. The liquids may be applied to the building materials by spreading, spraying or trowelling. The residue of filler loosely adhering to the building material after evaporation of the solvent may be removed by brushing or by blowing with compressed air.
