Abstract

1477457 Electrical testing of liquid GEORGE KENT Ltd 25 July 1974 [27 July 1973 26 Nov 1973] 35797/73 and 54777/73 Heading G1N Apparatus for measuring a property of a liquid comprises a probe 14 for sensing the property mounted in an open ended duct having a vertical portion 16 and at least its lower end immersed in the liquid and means 31 for injecting gas into the duct so that it entrains liquid and causes a flow of liquid past the probe. The probe is mounted in chamber 10 with its sensor part 14 extending into skirt 11 which with strainer 22 forms the lower end of the duct. Skirt 11 and the continuation 18, 17 of the duct are shaped to produce turbulent flow around the probe, thus helping to keep it clean. The vertical part of the duct 16 is connected to valve 21, which comprises elastic tube 40 which can be squashed by gas pressure at 41, and compressed gas inlet 31. The apparatus is immersed in the liquid so that outlet 39 is just above the liquid surface. The entrained gas from 31 produces a flow of liquid from outlet 39 and a corresponding flow in past the probe. Cleaning. To clean the electrode and strainer, valve 21 is closed and the gas supply is continued. The liquid level is forced down past the electrode and cleans it and cleans the strainer. If the sensor measures oxygen in water and the compressed gas is air, the sensor can be calibrated during this cleaning as it is surrounded by the oxygen in air. The chamber 10 may be extended upwards and contain two electric motors and air compressors, one which runs continuously for supply to 31 and the other producing an intermittent supply to the valve.
