Abstract
1477194 Toy sailing boats D HEATH 19 July 1974 32156/74 Heading A6S [Also in Division B7] A toy sailing boat 10 (Fig. 1) has a hull 11, at least one said 12 and a keel 15, the keel being substantially L-, J-, or C-shaped with a downwardly extending section 16 attached to the rear of the hull and a forwardly extending section 17 at the bottom of the downwardly extending section, so that the centre of wind pressure A is positioned forwardly of the centre of water pressure B. Thus in use the boat will always turn downwind. The section 16 is broad in the forward direction to give lateral water resistance, while section 17. is weighted relative to section 16 to provide a low centre of gravity, C of G, for increased rolling stability. Also for improved stability, the bottom of the keel is substantially the same distance below the deck as the top of the topmost sail is above the deck, the length of the hull being in proportion. The keel 15 may be made collapsible (Fig. 3, not shown), the section 16 being pivoted to a fixed attachment to the hull with the section 17 pivoted to the end of section 16, so that the keel can be folded up against the hull where it may be secured by a clip. When the keel is thus folded, the boat will float in shallower water. In another embodiment, a model square ridged ship, the sails (Fig. 4a) which are to be mounted on one mast are cut in one piece from sheet material so that the lower corners of one sail merge with the upper edge of the adjacent lower sail, each sail having an apertured tab by which the sails are mounted on the mast. The boat may be made of wood or plastics material e.g. the hull may be of polystyrene foam, although a heavier material e.g. lead, is used for the section 17 of the keel. The boat may be provided with plates or filaments attached in a vertical plane to the keel, the plates or filaments lying flat in the same plane as the keel when the boat is moving forward but opening outwardly if the keel moves backward in the water so as to restrict such backward movement and dampen any tendency for the boat to pitch.
