Abstract

1477180 Polyurethane foam laminates KOEPP AG 1 Aug 1974 [1 Aug 1973] 33945/74 Heading B5N In a process for the production of a laminate in which a web of polyether polyurethane foam is moved past a source of heat to heat it, e.g. to a temperature above 200‹ C., so that its surface melts or decomposes and the web of foam is then applied or pressed on to a web of the same or another material 'to bond the two layers, the tack of thermal fusion or decomposition products of the foam is increased by introducing into or forming in situ in the layer of fusion or decomposition products an acid, e.g. a hydrohalic acid, such that the flame, resistance of the foam is not substantially increased. The acid or compound from which it is formed may be introduced or applied (a) externally on the surface of the foam, e.g. by spraying, the acid or acid forming compound being applied from the gas burner or from a spray nozzle adjacent to the gas burner or infra red radiator used to heat the foam, (b) by impregnating the foam at least on its surface with the acid or acid forming compound or (c) by adding the acid forming compound, e.g. a halogenated diol, to the polyether polyurethane foam forming reaction mixture. The acid forming compound may be an organic halogen compound, e.g. a halogenated hydrocarbon halogenated phosphoric or phosphorous acid ester, α-halogenated alkyl aromatic compound, or halogenated alcohol, ester, ether or aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid, or a substituted or unsubstituted ammonium halide. The other web to which the foam web is laminated may be a knitted fabric containing 65% by weight of acrylic fibre and 35% by weight of cotton.
