1476205 Hand tool for wrapping tape on male threads GARLOCK Inc 19 July 1974 [1 Oct 1973] 32148/74 Headings B8G and B8M To wrap a male thread of a fitting with a tape using a portable hand tool having a case, a roll of tape mounted in the case, a rotatable threaded support roller mounted on the case, and means for manually clamping the thread against the roller, the thread is manually clamped against the roller, and end of the tape is fed into the nip between the thread and roller by manual movement of a lever, and the case and fitting are relatively rotated. The term "threaded" as applied to the support roller is defined as including circumferential grooves lying in parallel plane. To use the tool described, Fig. 4, the core 60 of a roll 18 of PTFE tape is mounted on spindle 66 of casing 12 so that core gear teeth engage gear 72 which engages feed roller 74. The tape end is threaded, Fig. 1, about guide post 76 and roller 74 at least to cutter 86. Cover 14 is then closed, two pins 102 on shaft 100 engaging two opposed core grooves 94. Casing handle 20 and handle 30 pivoted at 32 to the casing are then closed to place the tool on the male thread of fitting 22, and the handles are released so that spring 34 urges threaded rollers 26, 28 towards threaded support roller 24 to clamp the fitting. To eliminate tension in the tape before winding, lever 98 is rotated against spring bias along groove 110 to rotate the spool via shaft 100 and feed tape to form tape reserves at 62 and immediately before roller 24. Upon tool rotation, tape is gripped between roller 24 and the thread, and wound about the thread. During rotation, the tape is subject to constant tension due to spring 92 engaging the tape reel, and due to spring 90 acting on gear 72. The tape is pressed on to roller 74 by spring 78 which may be lifted by rotation of eccentric 84. The tape is cut by blade 86 moved by pivoted handle 120. Support 38 carrying roller 26 may be locked in the upper position for bigger threads. The thread of roller 24 has grooves extending axially of the roller. A tape viewing window 126 is provided in the casing. Alternatively, Fig. 6, for hollow threads the tool has threaded roller 132, threaded roller 134, and internal elastomeric clamping roller 136.
