Abstract

1475791 Automatic control systems UNION SPECIAL CORP 10 May 1974 [14 May 1973] 20682/74 Headings G3N and G3R A brushless motor is selectively controlled either in accordance with the sensed motor rotor position, to rotate the rotor continuously, or in accordance with signals at a fixed rate that is independent of the rotor position so as to step the rotor. In the embodiment, for use in a sewing machine, the position of the permanent magnet rotor is sensed using a tachometer having metallic segments on a disc that rotates with the rotor. These segments co-operate with fixed coils, energized from an oscillator, and which form part of a resonant circuit that is retuned as the segment passes so as to produce an A.C. output voltage dependent upon rotor speed. This voltage is rectified, compared with a manually selected desired speed value, any difference being used to vary the field winding current to the motor and thus control the motor speed in a closed loop manner, the rotor being continuously rotated. To brake the sewing machine, an operator releases a foot treadle, dynamic braking is started and the motor switched to a stepping mode control. A needle "up" or "down" position is selected and the motor driven until the rotor position, as sensed in a similar manner to the above speed, reaches the selected position, when the motor is switched off.
