Abstract

1475714 Apparatus for casting ASEA AB 21 Aug 1974 [23 Aug 1973] 36698/74 Heading B3F A casting apparatus comprises a tiltable melt container 11 provided with a tap hole 16, a sprue or trumpet 18 in communication with one or more moulds 20 and 21 via one or more channels 19, a first sealing means 24 attached to the sprue 18 and a second sealing means 25 attached to the container 11 around the hole 16, the arrangement being such that the first and second sealing means are brought into engagement with each other when the container is tilted into its pouring position to prevent admission of air to the melt stream during tapping. In the embodiment shown the sealing means comprise a flexible collar 24 and a flexible funnel 25. In another embodiment, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) the sealing is effected by pressing a metal flange (30) on the container 11 against a ring (29) of resilient material on the sprue. The container 11 is provided with an inductor unit 12 and an inlet 15 through which an inert gas under pressure may be admitted to control the rate of discharge of the melt from the container. The moulds 20 and 21 are provided with covers 26 having vents and/or inlets 27 for inert gas, e.g. argon. A conduit (33) or (36) for connection to a source of vacuum or inert gas may be connected to either the first or second sealing means to permit stream degassing.
