Abstract

1475246 Centrifugal separation UNI-CARDAN AG 23 Oct 1975 [23 Oct 1974] 43488/75 Heading B2P [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] A hollow rotatable body 3, such as a universal joint, which has a cavity 8 filled with a mixture of liquid (lubricant) and gas (air) is provided with a centrifugally actuated breather valve 1 which is constructed to open to allow entrance of exit of air only when the speed of rotation of the body 3 is sufficiently high as to have moved the liquid, by centrifugal force, away from the opening. The valve has a two part duct 13, 11, or 9, 11, with a valve seat 7 inbetween positioned substantially on one side of the axis of station 15 and a valve member 5, biased by a spring 6 to the closed position, positioned substantially on the opposite side. The valve may have an additional duct 12 or the duct may be so shaped, as shown in Fig. 3, such that any lubricant having congregated around the valve vent 7, while the body 3 was stationary, will be displaced inwardly, as the body rotates, before the valve opens.
