Abstract

1475051 Transfer coating process; pneumatically applied coating applicator IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 Jan 1976 [5 Feb 1975] 4886/75 Headings B2E and B2L A method of coating an article, e.g. with paint, pigment, dye, adhesive, lacquer, polymer, resin, particulate metal or fibres comprises:-(a) applying coating material to a carrier sheet, (b) effecting by pneumatic means, i.e. by variation of pressure in fluids, contact between the coated surface of the carrier sheet and the surface to be coated, and (c) maintaining the contact for a time sufficient to transfer the coating material from the carrier sheet to the article. The carrier sheet may be removed after coating; if it is left on the coated article, it is usually transparent. In one embodiment, housing 1 attached to frame 3 by bolts and a carrier sheet 4 coated with pigmented gel coat 5. Entry ports 6 are connected to a compressed air supply and pressure release valve 7. After compressed air has forced the sheet 4 into contact with pond 2, pressure is released through valve 7. A coating 5 is left on pond 2. Bolts 10 can be released to separate portions 8, 9 of the housing and remove the pond. In a further embodiment, housing 11 with hinges 12 and locking device 13 supports carrier sheet 16 by clamps 17. Ceiling 14 of the housing is formed with ports 18 and 19. Model 20, attached by arms 21 and legs 22 supports garment 23. A layer of dye 24 in a solvent is applied to sheet 16. A vacuum is created by suction through port 18 and dye layer 24 presses against garment 23 to dye it.
