Abstract

1474912 Centrifugal separator THOMAS BROADBENT & SONS Ltd 4 June 1974 [5 June 1973] 26653/73 Heading B2P [Also in Division C6] A centrifugal machine comprises a rack 14 disposed within a rotor 12 for supporting one or more bottles 18 containing a liquor, e.g. champagne, from which sediment is to be removed, the rack being arranged to support the or each bottle with its neck facing generally radially outwardly of the axis of rotation of the rotor, and means being provided for introducing a refrigerant around at least part of the neck portion of the or each bottle to enable a plug of liquor containing sediment to be frozen. As shown, the bottles 18 are supported in vertical rows in the rack and their necks extend into circumferentially spaced vertical chambers 17 defined by the rotor 12. the rack 14 and pairs of panels 16. An inlet pipe 20 serves to introduce refrigerant from a refrigeration plant into an annular channel 23 at the top of the rotor, the refrigerant passing through orifices 21 and flowing down the chambers 17 before spilling over orifices 22 into a collecting tray 19 from which it may be recycled to the refrigeration plant. The passages and chambers carrying refrigerant may be lined with, or constructed from, heat insulating material. In operation, bottles containing champagne from which sediment is to be removed and closed with, e.g. plastics bungs, are placed in the rack and the machine is brought up to a predetermined centrifuging speed e.g. 1000-1500 r.p.m. for 1-1¢ hours by which time the sediment gathers in the neck of each of the bottles. The centrifuging speed is reduced, e.g. to 150-300 r.p.m. and refrigerant is circulated through the chambers 17 until the champagne and sediment in each portion has frozen into a plug. The machine is then stopped, the bottles are removed from the rack and the plastics bungs removed whereupon the frozen plugs of champagne including the sediment are driven from the bottles by the pressure of the champagne.
