Abstract
1474855 Disc brakes CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 6 Aug 1975 [11 Nov 1974 31 Jan 1975] 32900/75 Heading F2E In a brake assembly having annular service and secondary pistons 122, 124 respectively, the pistons are in telescoping relationship. Piston 122 is moved axially to press interleaved discs 96, 98 against a thrust surface 86 when fluid is supplied to chamber 144 via passages 145, 146. Piston 124 is normally held inoperative by fluid pressure in chamber 132 but for emergency or parking brake application the fluid supply is automatically or selectively interrupted to allow springs 138 to urge the pistons into engagement with a shoulder 140 of piston 122, and so apply the brake. Fluid may simultaneously be supplied to chamber 144 to increase the braking force. Piston 124 moves on guides 148 fixed to piston 122 and carrying a relatively light retraction spring 150 for the latter piston. Further guides 120 prevent piston rotation. On termination of service braking a predetermined volume of fluid is withdrawn from chamber 144 to limit piston retraction and hence accommodate wear. Cooling fluid is circulated through the assembly from an inlet 52 to an outlet 54 and is said to assist piston retraction. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) cooling fluid exits via a passage in the service piston and the chambers containing springs 138; this enables actuating chamber 144 to be arranged at a greater effective radius than in the above embodiment. The brake assembly is connected to axle housing 14 by bolts 42 and is splined at 92 to wheel hub 22. On removal of the latter and bolts 42 the assembly can be withdrawn axially as a unit. Seals 105, 106 are made of glass fibre filled polytetrafluoroethylene.
