Abstract
1474605 Surface wave devices DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 14 May 1975 [13 May 1974] 21148/74 Heading H3U In a surface wave device, waves from input transducer means 2 travelling along tracks 3 and 4 are respectively reflected by gratings 5, 6 towards further gratings 9, 10 which reflect the waves to output transducer means 13, 14, metal layers 15, 16 of varying width being provided between the gratings in each track so as to vary the velocity of waves passing beneath them and thus to determine the impulse response of the device. The grating elements 7, 8 are strip conductors or equal depth grooves and, as shown, their spacing varies along the length of the gratings so that the device gives a swept frequency output. The shapes of layers 15, 16 are complementary, in that they would form a trapezium if combined, and the indent and narrowest parts of layer 15 introduce phase changer of # and #/2 respectively so that waves reflected at the ends of the gratings cancel at the combined output 17 and waves reflected at the centres are in phase. Alternatively elements 7, 8 may be equallyspaced, in which case the metal layers would combine to form a rectangle. In the modification of Fig. 4 (not shown) tracks 3, 4 lie on opposite sides of input transducer 2 and a single output transducer is used. In an alternative arrangement two input transducers may be used.
